NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

An annual tradition

The Saginaw Township Police Department hosts an annual "National Night Out" event to promote crime prevention and partnerships between the police and community.

The event allows community members to explore various police, fire and ems apparatus with hands-on tours of police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and medical aircraft.

Saginaw Township Police Department members from all divisions and units are represented at the event. Officers look forward to the opportunity to make positive contact with community members. national night out imgThey patiently answer questions about aspects of their career choice, the equipment they use and the types of calls for service they routinely handle.

The interaction with young people and children is rewarding because it gives the officers an opportunity to interact in a personable manner without the normal high awareness, sometimes stressful conditions that may otherwise be the reason for contact.

In addition to safety and fun materials for our youth, officers fit and distribute free bike helmets while supplies last.

History

National Night Out as we know it today was first held in 1984. Traditionally it is held the first Tuesday in August. The concept was the brainchild of National Association of Town Watch (NATW) Executive Director Matt A. Peskin.
