INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION

OVERVIEW

The Saginaw Township Police Department Investigations Division has multiple units.

Lieutenant Grauf is the supervisor for all units. he oversees two two detective Sergeants, nine detectives and three district resource officers.

Detectives are normally senior officers that have worked as road patrol officers. Many of our detectives are former Field Training Officers which helps to ensure that our investigators are well versed on criminal laws of the State and local ordinances.

HOW A CASE IS INVESTIGATED

Once a report is received from a resident or business, the patrol officer submits the initial report for review by a road patrol Sergeant. The Sergeant determines if further investigation will be required and if so, submits the report to the D/SGT's for their review.

Once the report is received, the a D/SGT will review and assign the case to a detective assigned to the district from which it originated. If the incident involves drugs, it may be assigned to the detective placed with BAYANET.

All cases involving auto theft are assigned to Detective Jackson who is currently assigned to the Saginaw County Auto Theft Team (S.C.A.T.T.)

Many times a case will be closed out immediately due to lack of leads or suspect information. These reports remain on file and can, if need a suspect is developed later on, be re-opened.

PROSECUTION

Once the case is received by a detective, it is review and any follow-up investigation that may be required takes place. Once the detective is satisfied there is enough probable cause, the incident is presented to one of the assistant prosecuting attorney;s for the Saginaw County Prosecutors Office.

It is the prosecutor that determines if charges will be issued against the identified suspect. There are times, that even is a suspect is identified, the assistant prosecutor will decline to seek further action and deny issuing a warrant.

The detective will normally notify the victim as to the result of the presentation of the case to the assistant prosecutor.

TRIAL

If charges are issued and the suspect is subsequently arrested, witnesses on the matter will be subpoenaed to 70th District Court for a preliminary examination or trial.

If a preliminary examination is held, testimony to show there is probably cause to go to trial on the matter will be presented. Often times, a plea arrangement is negotiated by the Saginaw County Prosecutors Office at this stage and once a plea is entered, the matter is concluded as far as our detectives involvement goes
